Benzylalkohol
Benzylalkohol ist in zahlreichen Medikamenten und Kosmetikartikeln als Duft- und Aromastoff enthalten. Außerdem dient der Alkohol als Konservierungsstoff für Injektionslösungen und Kosmetika sowie als Desinfektionsmittel.
Allergische Reaktionen auf Benzylalkohol sind bislang kaum beobachtet worden.
Die amerikanische Arzneimittelagentur hat Benzylalkohol zur Behandlung von Kopfläusen zugelassen. Benzylalkohol verhindert, dass die Parasiten vorübergehend ihre Atemöffnungen nicht mehr schließen können. Das Öl verstopft die Atemwege und die Läuse ersticken.
